FAQ

1. What is the difference between a fire gate valve and a butterfly valve?

A fire gate valve uses a gate to open or isolate the waterway and normally provides a relatively unobstructed flow path when fully open. A butterfly valve uses a rotating disc and has a more compact structure, which may help in locations with limited installation space. Selection should consider valve size, hydraulic loss, operating method, installation space, supervision requirements, maintenance access, and project approval.

2. What is an OS&Y gate valve used for in a fire sprinkler system?

An outside screw and yoke, or OS&Y, gate valve provides a visible indication of valve position because the stem rises as the valve opens. It is commonly used as an isolation or control valve in fire protection water supplies, risers, and related piping where a clear open-or-closed indication is required. The valve size, connection, pressure rating, listing, and supervision method should match the system design.

3. How do I choose between flanged, grooved, wafer, and lug butterfly valves?

Flanged and grooved valves connect directly to matching flanges or grooved piping components. Wafer butterfly valves are installed between two flanges, while lug butterfly valves have threaded lugs that may support different installation or removal arrangements. The correct choice depends on mating dimensions, pipe connection, pressure rating, available space, maintenance plan, and whether the downstream piping must remain secured when one side is disconnected.

4. Does a fire sprinkler control valve need a supervisory switch?

Many fire protection systems require control valves to be supervised so that an unintended movement away from the normal operating position can be detected. This may be achieved through an integral or external supervisory switch, electrical monitoring, locking, sealing, or another method permitted by the applicable code. The required method depends on the valve type, system design, local rules, and authority having jurisdiction.

5. What should be checked before ordering a UL/FM fire valve?

Confirm the valve type, nominal size, working pressure, body and trim materials, connection type, operating method, normal valve position, and any supervisory-switch requirements. The UL Listing or FM Approval should then be checked against the exact model, size, pressure rating, and configuration being purchased. Flange standard, groove dimensions, coating, testing documents, quantity, and destination requirements should also be stated in the RFQ.
